Charlie Butterfly is written by the internationally renowned author KLAUS RIFBJERG in collaboration with Dariusz Steiness. Zentropa produced the film in collaboration with the Danish Film Institute.
The film is Rifbjerg and Steiness’ serious bid on a classic father-son epos. Their goal was to create a work of art which is timeless and broadly appealing, and – above all – rises the individual above its own destiny.
Awards
Charlie Butterfly won the Audience Award at Mannheim-Heidelberg Int. Film Festival, the Most Innovative Cinematography Prize in Madrid – Madrid Imagen – and was nominated for seven Robert Awards in Denmark.

Reviews
“Charlie Butterfly, A SECRET HIT”
This is what author Bo Green Jensen wrote about Dariusz Steiness´ film debut from 2002 in the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen in June 2017.
In Bo Green Jensen’s review of the boxing-film ”The Best Man”, he praises Dariusz’ debut film Charlie Butterfly produced by Zentropa Productions.
“As far as I know there has only been one Danish film presenting boxing as its main theme. Klaus Rifbjerg wrote the manuscript and Baard Owe had one of the best roles of his life in Dariusz Steiness’ poetic fable about Charlie Butterfly (2002). The film had such a small audience that you cannot even call it a failure. More like a secret hit. It contained so many finesses, like the fight between Hans Henrik Palm and Jørgen “Oldie” Hansen recreated by the boxers themselves in the original, mythological boxing ring.”
